1. The Republic of Korea, in its capacity as the chair country of the Multilateral Organisation Performance Assessment Network (MOPAN), hosted a meeting of the MOPAN Steering Committee in Seoul on May 10 and 11.

° MOPAN, a network of 17 donor countries, was established in 2002 to evaluate the organizational and development effectiveness of multilateral organizations that handle development cooperation and humanitarian assistance. The ROK, which became MOPAN’s first Asian member in December 2008, assumed its chairmanship in January 2016, becoming the first Asian country to do so.

2. MOPAN is a network of 17 advanced donor countries whose contributions account for 95% of the world’s total multilateral assistance. The meeting of the Steering Committee, MOPAN’s premier decision-making organ, brought together delegates from the 17 MOPAN member states, including the ROK, and the MOPAN Secretariat.

3. The meeting covered the progress in the evaluation of twelve international organizations, including the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the World Bank, as well as its way forward; ways to effectively use the outcome of MOPAN’s evaluations; ways to increase the number of the MOPAN member states; and ways for MOPAN to contribute to the international community, including in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

4. The ROK, which holds the presidency of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is playing a pivotal role in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; and is leading global discussions on multilateral development cooperation as the chair country of MOPAN. Such efforts are seen to be helping the ROK enhance its international standing as an exemplary donor country.

5. The ROK is actively implementing multilateral diplomacy in 2016, as demonstrated by its chairmanship of a combined ten international organizations and consultative mechanisms, including MOPAN. The MOPAN meeting marked the first that the ROK has hosted in Seoul as the chair of those bodies.
